For the stages of this out-of-town excursion, we suggest a departure from the beautiful city of Matera, a walk through the multicultural history of Tricarico, a flight through nature in the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park and a creative dinner for an exceptional gastronomic experience.

Among the Sassi, a priceless treasure

Matera, known as the ‘City of the Sassi’, is one of Italy's historical gems. Its ancient districts offer us a journey through time, transporting us back into the millennial shadows of buildings carved into the rock in an extraordinary union of human ingenuity and natural resources.

The Sassi of Matera have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and have served as the backdrop for numerous films and artistic productions. So let's get lost together in the winding streets of this town and immerse ourselves in a living work of art, where every corner tells a story of ancient civilisations and cultures.

What to absolutely see around here

After being thrilled by the millenary rocks of Matera, here we discover another village that has much to tell: Tricarico.

This medieval village is situated on the slopes of the Lucanian hills and is characterised by narrow streets winding through the ancient walls of historic buildings. The village is famous for its majestic Norman castle, which towers imposingly over the surrounding landscape like a guardian that has many legends and secrets to tell from the heart of the Middle Ages, coming straight from the heart of the Middle Ages.

Visiting a castle is always a rewarding experience, but if you are looking for that extra bit of adrenaline, we suggest a stop in the beautiful Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park!

Here, amidst the majestic mountains and centuries-old forests, you will find the famous ‘Flight of the Angel’, an exciting attraction that allows visitors to literally fly through the treetops via a series of panoramic zip lines.

If you don't want to take a ‘leap into the void’, you will still have the chance to walk in the unspoilt nature of the beautiful park.

Finally dinner

We return to Matera with a big empty stomach! After a day spent nourishing ourselves with history and beauty, it is time for something more substantial.

As the last stop on our itinerary, sit down at the table with us and San Benedetto Antica Fonte della Salute, at the Basquiat ‘little restaurant’ located in an evocative historical building that delights the palate with its refined and creative dishes, and makes us feel at home with its unique atmosphere where art is the protagonist.

Our itinerary among the wonders of Basilicata has come to an end, but we do not return home empty-handed because our luggage is full of extraordinary experiences.

The incredible Matera and its ‘sassi’ astounded us with their combination of human architectural ingenuity and nature; the Norman castle of Tricarico whispered in our ears stories of a distant past of lords and knights; and we literally flew over one of Italy's most evocative natural landscapes, all topped off with an uncommonly good taste experience!
