Our itinerary in Friuli Venezia Giulia begins in Marano Lagunare, a picturesque fishing village nestled in the tranquillity of the lagoon, where time seems to stand still. We continue to the archaeological area of Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to admire the majestic Roman forum and immerse ourselves in the grandeur of a glorious past.

The day ends in Palmanova, the famous star-shaped city, where the historic Caffetteria Torinese welcomes us with a dinner celebrating the authentic flavours of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The pearl of the lagoon

We are about 30 kilometres from Udine, to be precise at our first stop: Marano Lagunare. This seaside village, with Roman origins and a history linked to the Serenissima, is reminiscent of a miniature Venice, with its maze of alleyways and small squares. The only town in Friuli where the Veneto dialect is spoken, it is also the ideal starting point for exploring the lagoon, an extraordinary natural oasis. Iconic are the ‘casoni’, ancient fishermen's shelters, a symbol of the deep bond with nature.

In Marano Lagunare, the undisputed star is the fresh catch: sea bass, gilthead bream, flounder and eel, accompanied by molluscs such as clams and fasolari, as well as typical crustaceans such as prawns, molecules and masanete.
