We are often accustomed to associating the region of Lazio with our splendid capital Rome, but the truth is that around the Eternal City there are myriad fascinating villages peeping out of the Apennines and just waiting to be discovered, camera in hand!

Our itinerary takes us right along a picturesque route that caresses the border with Abruzzo, made up of ancient walls, castles and unforgettable views. We start from the village of Canterano, a municipality steeped in history and authenticity in the province of Rome, and continue northwards, losing ourselves in the ancient flavour of Arsoli and its castle, amidst local gastronomic delights!

Every stone has a story to tell

Ready to go? Canterano is our first stop, chosen for the historical richness and beauty it has to offer. Its Etruscan and Roman roots are recounted through the medieval churches that enrich the historic centre, enveloping the atmosphere with a spirituality that we can also breathe in the narrow alleys that snake through the village.

But Canterano is not only antiquity: the underground caves, once shelters during World War II, speak to us of resistance, courage and strength during one of the darkest periods of our recent history.

A bite for lunch

The Ristorante Miramonti enchants with its breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. We stop right here for lunch and enjoy the local flavours encapsulated in the authenticity of the masterfully prepared dishes. The cosy atmosphere and warm service make us feel at home and prepare us with gusto to continue our itinerary.

What to absolutely see around here

On the road climbing up the mountains we arrive at our next stop, Arsoli, the enchanting village on the border between the Lazio and Abruzzo regions.

We visit the heart of the historic centre dotted with medieval buildings and churches and do not miss the opportunity to capture in photos the magnificent panorama from the Garibaldi Belvedere, which offers a spectacular view of the Aniene Valley and the surrounding peaks.

We do not miss a visit to the imposing Castello Massimo, symbol of the ancient power and nobility of this village. We stroll along its mighty walls and crenellated towers, plunging into ancient atmospheres and discover the frescoes in the great halls that bear witness to a glorious past.
